Windows 8 has been around for a while now but it’s fair to say that it has received much criticism and many people have been put off and unwilling to upgrade. But with the recent release of Windows 8.1, could now be the time to embrace the new operating system and go for an upgrade? Here are 8 reasons why you should.

  1. One of the major gripes with Windows 8 was the removal of the much loved Start button. Windows 8.1 has brought it back and you can now even boot directly to a classic Windows desktop.
  2. Cloud storage is built into Windows 8 so there is no longer a need to keep backing up your important documents onto hundreds of floppy disc (what do you mean ‘what’s a floppy disc?’)
  3. The time it takes to boot up your PC has improved significantly with the new operating system. Indeed, Windows 8.1 boots even quicker than Windows 8.
  4. Anyone who uses Skype will be pleased to know that this has become an integral part of Windows 8, replacing the legacy Windows Messenger application.
  5. There wasn’t much on offer in the way of apps when Windows 8 first shipped, but now there are apps-a-plenty and also an improved Windows Store available in Windows 8.1
  6. Not only does Windows 8 use less RAM and CPU resources, it also runs faster and intelligently drops to a lower power consumption mode when possible, saving both energy and of course, precious battery life.
  7. The new ‘Modern UI’ (previously known as ‘Metro’), whilst ideally suited to touch screen tablets and computers, is also cropping up in other places from websites, to smart phones, to even gaming consoles. Embracing this new modern interface will make it easier to transition between separate devices.
  8. And finally, probably one of the more important reasons, Microsoft recently announced that they will be discontinuing support for Windows XP early next year. The chances are that if you are still using Windows XP, then you won’t be for much longer and therefore an upgrade to Windows 8 (or better, 8.1) would be a logical choice.
